Christina Myalla

Research Data Scientist · Geospatial Health · Data Engineering

I am a Research Data Scientist at the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) East Africa Node, based at Ifakara Health Institute in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with a joint affiliation to The Kids Research Institute Australia. I lead the Node’s Data Engineering Team and coordinate MAP’s Geospatial Modelling training programme.

My work turns messy, multi-source health data into spatial evidence that health programmes can act on. I build reproducible pipelines that harmonise health facility data across sub-Saharan Africa, model how long it takes people to reach care, and measure how climate hazards such as floods disrupt that access. I then package the results as dashboards and portals for National Malaria Control Programmes.

Before MAP, I spent over a decade managing data for clinical trials and cohort studies in Tanzania, including household GPS data collection, multi-country trial databases and data quality systems.

Research interests

  • Geographic accessibility and travel-time modelling for health services
  • Climate hazards (floods) and disruption of access to care
  • Spatial data science and Earth observation data for public health
  • Reproducible data pipelines and decision tools for malaria programmes
